What Students Need to Know About this Major Update

For the first time in almost a decade, the ACT will undergo a significant transformation. Starting in 2025, the paper ACT will transition to an “enhanced” version in September, while the online ACT, currently offered in select locations, will switch to the new format in April.

An official practice test for the enhanced ACT is expected in early 2025, however the ACT assures students that current prep materials remain relevant, as the updated test will assess the same core skills and knowledge. A notable change is the Science section, which will now be optional.

Registration for April 2025 and later test dates are expected to open in early December 2024.

Our recommendation would be for students preparing to take the ACT to still opt for the Science section, as colleges may still expect this component. If students have the option between the current paper test or the new online format in April or June, we also suggest sticking with the paper test because this choice provides a familiar format, established prep resources, and avoids the risks associated with being among the first to navigate a new format. For those interested, the enhanced ACT can also be taken in the summer or fall.

"Current practice tests and available ACT test prep materials are still great for preparing because there has been no significant change in the types of knowledge and skills measured by the ACT test with the enhancements.” - ACT, Inc.
